The Best SSAT Practice Books

It is important to get lots of practice before taking the SSAT. A high SSAT score gives you the best chance of admission and a scholarship. The SSAT is as important as your grades.

Every SSAT student should use the official SSAT guide. If you take a timed SSAT test and score well, then the official SSAT guide is likely all you need.

If you need more improvement, you’ll want to order some supplementary guides created by test prep companies. These don’t use real SSAT questions, but they still offer a good guide as to what will be on the test.

 

The three guides that I use with my students are the Barron’s SSAT Guide, the Kaplan SSAT guide and Cracking the SSAT guide by the Princeton Review. They each cost around $15 on amazon, and it’s worthwhile to get both to be sure of having enough practice materials.

If you have a McGraw-Hill book, it is substantially similar.

 

Update: A new set of SSAT books arrived, and they’re now the best on the market. The guides by Ivy Global are expensive, but they’re the best investment you can make for SSAT prep. They have good strategies for all sections, and more practice materials than all other guides combined. I recommend getting the complete set.

For learning vocabulary, Direct Hits and Direct Hits: Toughest Words are great books that help you learn words in context. It’s more interesting than memorizing vocabulary lists. Reading in English is also a good idea. Sherlock Holmes is a good book. It is fun to read, and uses vocabulary that appears on the SSAT.

Get The Official SSAT Guide

The SSAT publishes an official guide. You can get it on their website for $35. Order early, as it can take a couple of weeks to ship to Canada. This is the SSAT book you need to buy.

You may already have ordered an SSAT book from amazon. Princeton Review’s and Kaplan’s books are both popular – I use these in my lessons.

But they’re not enough. The questions in commercial SSAT books are not real SSAT questions. Kaplan and Princeton Review make up their own questions to simulate the SSAT.

Only the official SSAT guide uses real SSAT questions. It has two official exams, they’re the only available SSAT exams, and every SSAT student should take those two tests before writing the real SSAT. Taking two official tests will help your child get a better score, which will let them get admitted to a good school and maybe even get a scholarship.

Timed Practice Is The Best Indicator Of Your SSAT Score

Before taking the SSAT, it is important to do practice tests to be sure you’ll get a good score.

The SSAT is a timed test. You only have one minute to do each math question, on average. You only have 30 seconds to do verbal questions. So the only way to get an accurate practice SSAT score is to take the practice tests under timed conditions.

If you’re already doing this, great. If you’re not, please switch. If you’re a parent, help your child do the practice sections with proper timing, and consider setting aside three hours one day to time them on a full test. It is very helpful to have someone else timing you when you’re writing a test.

The entire SSAT takes around 3 hours. Here is the timing for the two upper level tests in the official SSAT guide. These are the only official SSAT exams.

Rules

• Only do the section you’re working on. Don’t jump forward or backward.
• Only use pencils, erasers and paper. No calculators, dictionaries, rulers or cell phones. (Full list of materials allowed)
• Use the answer sheets found at the back of the official guide.
• The essays are found at the back of the official guide.

Upper Level Test I and Test II Timing

Writing Sample:        25 minutes.     (Found on p. 221.)

First Break:                  5 Minutes

Section I, Math:          30 Minutes

Section II, Reading:  40 Minutes

Second Break:             10 Minutes

Section III, Verbal:   30 Minutes

Section IV, Math:      30 Minutes

Total Time:                   2 hours, 50 minutes

Il Faut Faire Le SSAT Sous Chronometre

Le SSAT impose des strictes temps limites pour chaque section. Pour connaitre votre niveau actuel sur le test, il faut faire des tests simulé, et les faire en utilisant les temps limites officiels.
